Training Specialist – Airside Operations

Position overview 

We are looking for a permanent, full-time Training Specialist – Airside Operations to join us in the Airside Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Airside Operations, this role will develop course curriculum, plans and delivers practical and theoretical training for YVR employees in the various roles of Airside Operations. This includes developing training modules that can be delivered in person or online, researching training best practices, and incorporating that research, writing, and editing into lesson plans and training materials.

The role will focus on ongoing assessment to ensure training is up-to-date and relevant for the changing nature of the operation, as well as defining learning objectives and technical skill competency. Additionally, ongoing training needs assessment, incorporating feedback from other business units and continuous program improvements, will be required.

Key responsibilities include:  

  • Conduct training sessions in the appropriate format for the learner and subject matter, which includes online, in-class, in-terminal, and airside (adaptable to a shift environment)
  • Develop on the job training, mentoring and evaluation structure for trainers and trainees
  • Develop and design course curriculum content in partnership with Learning & Development team’s Learning Designers and implement process to ensure staff in each department are knowledgeable and able to deliver exceptional work
  • Write lessons and training plans using learning objectives and evaluations, as well as develop and consistently apply tools for evaluation training, skill and competency effectiveness
  • Gather and apply feedback from staff and teams, and incorporates new information to ensure training is relevant, engaging and current
  • Responsible for training the Airside Operations Department as well as playing a role in educating other departments and stakeholders on airside operations, such as new employee orientations and new contractor partners 

Key qualifications include:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in creating and implementing training programs for adult learners, with minimum 5 years’ experience in airside operations, supplemented by a one to two years of post-secondary education in Training and Development, Adult Education, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Provincial instructor’s diploma (PID) or an equivalent technical-skill instruction experience, and/or professional designation in adult training is required 
  • Experience with online learning tools and technology to successfully deliver training in-person and online
  • Strong understanding of the needs and styles of adult learners along with an awareness of various learning styles and learning methodologies
  • Exceptional communication (listening, writing, speaking), presentation, research, analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent relationship skills, knowledge of airport business partners, operations, processes and procedures

This position is open to both Vancouver Airport Authority employees and external applicants. Previous job performance will be taken into consideration for all internal candidates that apply for this position.

As part of our recruitment process, short-listed candidates will be required to conduct a 15-minute presentation on a topic selected by the hiring manager.

Salary Range : $72,008 to $94,115 per annum, based on 37.5 hours per week. This is individually tailored to reflect your unique experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
