Director, Commercial Insights
YVR is a place of connection, bringing together people, places and cargo while ensuring a safe and efficient experience for everyone.
Position Overview
Reporting to the VP of Commercial Data, the Director, Commercial Insights leads YVR’s business-facing commercial intelligence, enterprise performance and data-driven business decision-support capability. The Director translates operational, passenger, digital, transaction, financial, tenant and partner data into trusted insight that improves commercial yield, strengthens performance and supports YVR’s commercial strategic objectives. The role serves as the principal insights and performance partner to Commercial Services and Commercial Marketing, connecting passenger volumes, movement, dwell, terminal conditions, digital engagement, product usage and transaction behaviour to performance across YVR’s non-aeronautical revenue streams.
The Director owns the business design and adoption of commercial data-informed executive decision-making dashboards, commercial forecasts, predictive insight and self-service intelligence and business performance-review products. Working closely with IT, the role defines business requirements, analytical logic, quality thresholds and decision use cases for governed commercial data products, while creating multidisciplinary teams across commercial analytics, enterprise reporting, forecasting, performance management, insight development and intelligence-product delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement a Commercial Insights and Business Performance Optimization strategy aligned with YVR’s objectives and the priorities of Commercial Services, Operations, Finance and the Executive Team, including annual plans, multi-year intelligence roadmaps, analytical products and performance routines.
- Develop integrated analytical views that connect passenger volumes, movement, dwell, journey stage, terminal location, digital behaviour, product usage, transactions, operational conditions and financial outcomes to identify and quantify commercial opportunities, risks, conversion gaps, capacity constraints and utilization patterns.
- Lead the development of enterprise commercial insights dashboards, models, forecasts, scorecards, self-service tools and executive intelligence products, translating complex operational, passenger, commercial and financial information into a coherent performance narrative for senior leaders and the Board.
- Establish and govern enterprise performance measures, including KPI frameworks, semantic definitions, hierarchies, benchmarks, targets and reporting standards, ensuring commercial metrics are trusted, traceable, board-ready and consistent across dashboards, forecasts and business cases.
- Lead commercial and enterprise forecasting covering passenger demand, spend per passenger, conversion, product use, tenant performance, operational conditions and other material drivers, advancing YVR from retrospective reporting toward predictive and proactive intelligence through trend detection, anomaly identification, scenario modelling and early-warning views.
- Support Commercial Services, Marketing, Operations and Finance with decision-ready insight and analytical support for commercial pricing, product packaging, assortment, space allocation, lease and concession decisions, capital planning, business cases and performance interventions, including independently assessing enterprise and incremental business impact.
- Establish analytical approaches for passenger and customer segmentation, experimentation, causal analysis, opportunity sizing and performance measurement, and work with Marketing and Commercial Services to define business objectives, baselines, target populations, measures, data requirements and post-initiative review plans.
- Build and lead a high-performing multidisciplinary Commercial Insights team and culture, overseeing commercial analytics, reporting, forecasting, data science, visualization, business analysis and intelligence-product management, while managing resources, technology, research, specialist vendors and departmental investments.
Key qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Commerce, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Data Analytics, Operations Research, Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in commercial intelligence, business intelligence, enterprise analytics, data science, performance management, revenue management or a related field.
- At least five years of experience leading, inspiring and developing a highly engaged multidisciplinary analytics, intelligence or performance-management team.
- Demonstrated success translating multiple operational, passenger, digital, commercial and financial data sources into integrated intelligence products that support executive decisions and measurable outcomes.
- Strong commercial acumen, including understanding of revenue drivers, margin, yield, pricing, conversion, utilization, customer value, retail or service economics and investment returns.
- Demonstrated experience establishing enterprise KPI frameworks, executive dashboards, scorecards, self-service reporting and performance-review processes in a complex organization, with advanced knowledge of forecasting, scenario modelling, segmentation, predictive analytics, causal inference, experimentation, optimization and analytical quality assurance.
- Proven ability to define business requirements and direct or influence data, engineering, architecture and platform teams, with working knowledge of data governance, privacy, consent, confidentiality, cybersecurity and responsible use of passenger, commercial, employee and partner data.
