Position overview 

Are you detail oriented, highly organized and enjoy working in a structured environment? We have a permanent full-time opportunity for a Fire Inspector in the YVR Fire & Rescue Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections and enforcing fire codes and safety regulations. 

The position liaises with the YVR business partners, managers of commercial leasing, YVR legal, owners and operators of commercial establishments, insurance agency representatives, and RCMP investigators through fire investigations, fire safety inspections, complaint investigations, public education, training seminars and working with individuals to become proactive in addressing fire prevention issues as they develop or change.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct buildings and premises inspections to identify fire hazards, ensure compliance with fire codes, enforce fire safety regulations, and examine fire protection systems, emergency exits, alarms, sprinkler systems, and other safety features to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  • Issue citations or orders to comply with fire safety standards and conduct follow-up inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare detailed reports on investigations, findings, recommendations, violations and maintain accurate records including other related activities.
  • Review building plans and blueprints to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and standards and provide recommendations for fire safety measures during the building design and construction phases.
  • Work collaboratively with other fire department personnel, building officials, construction professionals, and emergency response agencies to provide guidance and support during the planning and construction stages of new buildings to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and standards.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and collaborate with other agencies to identify the cause and origin of fires and other fire related incidents.
  • Assist in emergency response situations and provide technical expertise to incident commanders.

Key qualifications include:

  • Completion of a high school diploma or GED equivalent or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 4 years of experience in Fire Prevention role (LAFC) in relation to interpretation of the BC Fire code, or at least 1 year experience in public education and firefighting
  • Completion of NFPA 1001, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector & Plans Examine, NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator, Fire Protection Technician Certificate (ASTTBC) or equivalent, BC Fire Code Certificate, BC Building Code course.
  • Ability to be registered Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC) with limited powers of a peace officer.
  • Holds a valid BC Driver’s License with a clear driver’s abstract (i.e., less than 6 points)
  • Ability to secure Airside Vehicle Operating Permit (AVOP) and Aeronautical Radio Operators License.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • Strong proficiency in computer communications and administrative work.
  • Strong work ethic with a high level of initiative and enthusiasm, and an ability to excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • A team player, capable of working both collaboratively and independently.
  • A strong concern for the health and safety of self and others, and the ability to work safely and effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to manage difficult situations effectively, quickly and safely.
  • Ongoing requirements for maintaining fitness level; maintaining all security clearances, passes and certifications; clear criminal record check; good attendance record; and other necessary requirements.

This position is open to both Vancouver Airport Authority employees and external applicants. Previous job performance will be taken into consideration for all internal candidates that apply for this position.

Salary Range : $ 86,326 to $ 112 823 per annum, based on a 40-hour work week. This is individually tailored to reflect your unique experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
